Sophia is a humanoid robot with incredible social skills, capable of reading human emotions and making over 50 different facial expressions.
David Hanson, Sophia’s creator, modelled her after the American actress Audrey Hepburn and drew on his previous experience working at Disney to help conceptualise her design. Sophia uses artificial intelligence, visual data processing and facial recognition and can hold simple conversations on pre-defined topics.
In 2017, Sophia became an official citizen of Saudi Arabia – the first non-human to be awarded citizenship of any country. Later that year, she was named the United Nations Development Programme’s first ever Innovation Champion, and is the first non-human to be given any United Nations title.
Sophia has been a notable public figure since her creation, and has appeared on CBS 60 Minutes with Charlie Rose, Good Morning Britain with Piers Morgan, and outlets like CNBC, Forbes, Mashable, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, and the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
